Same empty rooms, same scrub brushes, two very different reasons. A move-out clean is for the person leaving. You want the deposit back, or you want the buyers to walk into a house that looks cared for. A move-in clean is for the person arriving. You want to unpack into a kitchen that’s actually clean, not just “the last people wiped it down.”
So what’s actually different? Not much, on the cleaning side. Either way, somebody’s opening every cabinet, getting into the oven, wiping down baseboards and scrubbing the bathrooms. The real difference is the calendar. If you’re moving out, it gets done once the truck pulls away and before you drop off the keys. If you’re moving in, it slots in between their exit and your arrival.

What’s included in a move-in or move-out clean?
At Radiant Cleaning, both are the same service. We call it our Move In/Move Out/Post Construction Clean, and it goes further than a regular deep clean in a few big ways.
Kitchens are done inside and out. That means inside every cabinet and every appliance, plus the light fixtures, sliding doors and the pantry. Bathrooms get the full treatment, in, around, under and behind everything. In the laundry room, the washer and dryer are included. Built-in cabinets and walk-in closets get wiped down. On top of that, you get window sills and all the molding, so baseboards, wainscoting and chair rails. Ceiling fans under 9 feet are dusted, and every floor is vacuumed and mopped.
Like all our services, it also includes disinfecting the surfaces everybody touches, things like doorknobs, cabinet handles and light switches, with EPA-registered disinfectants. We bring all the supplies and tools.
How is that different from a regular deep clean?
The insides.
In a standard deep clean, kitchen cabinets and appliances get cleaned on the outside. The fridge interior, the oven interior and the inside of the cabinets are add-ons you schedule ahead of time. That makes sense in a home where people live, where cabinets are full of dishes and the fridge is full of food.
In an empty house, there’s nothing in the way. So the move-in and move-out clean covers the inside of every cabinet and appliance as part of the job. If you want the difference between our regular and deep services in more detail, read Difference Between Deep Cleaning and Regular Cleaning.
One thing to know up front. Interior windows aren’t on the list for this service. If you want them done, ask about it when you book.
When should you schedule a move-out clean?
After the movers leave, before anyone inspects.
A move-out clean works best when the home is empty. Furniture hides dust lines, scuffs and whatever rolled under the couch three years ago. Once it’s gone, everything can get cleaned, and nothing gets dragged back across a clean floor.
Renting? Then your deposit is on the line. New Jersey gives landlords 30 days after the lease ends to send it back, and if they hold any of it, they owe you a written list of why. You want the place spotless before the landlord walks through, so book the cleaning ahead of that final inspection. Our Move-Out Cleaning Checklist: Getting Your NJ Security Deposit Back goes room by room through what landlords look at.
If you sold the house, there’s no deposit to chase. You’re cleaning for the buyers walking in on day one. We wrote about getting a house ready on the selling side in How to Prepare Your Home for Professional Cleaning Before Putting It on the Market.
When should you schedule a move-in clean?
After the last owner or tenant is out, before your first box comes through the door.
That window can be short, sometimes just a day between closing or lease start and moving day. It’s worth fighting for, though. Once your boxes are stacked in the kitchen, nobody’s cleaning inside those cabinets.
A few tips that make the visit go smoother:
- Get the keys or a garage code to us ahead of time.
- Make sure the power and water are on.
- Turn the air conditioning on in warm weather, since we ask for that while the team works.
- Finish any painting or repairs first, so the dust from that work isn’t left behind.
How is a move-in or move-out clean priced?
By the square footage of the home, same as our first-time deep cleans. If parts of the house won’t be cleaned, like a finished basement you’re handling yourself, we can adjust for that. Estimates come by phone, text, or email.
We also work in 2-hour arrival windows, so plan your day around that rather than an exact time.
Frequently asked questions
Are move-in and move-out cleaning the same thing?
Pretty much, yes. Same checklist. The only real differences are when it happens and whether you’re coming or going.
Will you clean inside the fridge and oven on a move-out?
Yep. Every cabinet and every appliance in the kitchen gets done inside and out.
Does the house need to be empty?
That’s the best way to do it. With nothing in the way, we can get into every closet, cabinet and corner.
How long does a NJ landlord have to give back my deposit?
Thirty days from the end of the lease. If they keep any of it, they have to list what it’s for.
