Deep cleaning doesn’t just mean purging your space, it means getting the house completely clean, just as it (hopefully) would have been the day that you walked in. Here are five things to do with your semi-annual deep cleaning and why it’s important to do them.
It’s Good For Your Health
A deep clean can be really beneficial for your home and your health.
According to some studies, more than 30,000 bacteria live under your toilet seat, thousands more live elsewhere in your bathroom. Not to mention the kitchen or living room. It’s fair to say that a deep-clean of particularly the bathroom and kitchen is very good for your health. Break out the Clorox and rubber gloves and go to town. Under the toilet seat, in the bath, anywhere you can think of that bacteria might gather. Even the towel rails need a thorough wipe down. Leave no stone unturned in the bathroom, your body will thank you for it.
It Keeps The Space Fresh
No matter how often you clean your house, giving it really good clean, always feels fantastic. Twice a year, blitz through your home like the Luftwaffe over London. Don’t just do the basic cleaning, take the time to empty your cupboards in the kitchen and clean in behind them, crusty old pasta or rice attracts mice, not the kind of dinner guests you want! Deep cleaning your kitchen area every 6 months is a great way to ward off those kinds of pests. Lift up those couch/chair cushions and vacuum under them. Clamber on the kitchen countertops to clean above the cupboards, as dust accumulation is very common in such places. Move the fridge out from the wall and clean underneath it, if possible. Small things like these make a big difference in how clean your space is.
Carpets Are Germ Factories
Do you want to talk about germ factories? Look no further than the floor. If you have carpet, it is imperative that you, at the very least, once every two weeks, vacuum that sucker. If you’re going to vacuum your carpet, you should also deep-clean it at least once every six months. You can usually rent a carpet cleaner at your local hardware store. The cleaner uses brushes to deep-clean the fibers of the carpet, sucking up everything from dirt and grime to dog hair. For those with pets, it’s a great option to help make the carpets shine again. While they’ll likely never be in brand-new condition, the difference between a clean and unclean carpet is like night-and-day.
Calms Your Allergies
For those with allergies, having a clean environment is paramount. This is yet another reason to deep-clean your space. Such a clean will temporarily kill things like dust mites, carpet cleaning or vacuuming will pick up loose pet hairs. Allergens often accumulate in things like ceiling rafters and light fixtures and the space behind your furniture. For those who never pull their couch out when they vacuum or forget about the light fixture or ceiling fan when they’re doing their normal cleaning, taking the time to focus on those areas during the deep-clean can really save you a lot of hassle and trouble breathing for yourself, or those in the home who may suffer from asthma.
You’ll Feel Better!
One of the main reasons for a six-month deep clean is just how good you will feel about your space afterward. If you feel overwhelmed, or like your home is a mess and everything is in disarray, one of the best things you can do for yourself is to take the whole day on the weekend and just clean. Get into every nook and cranny that you can, clean the oft-forgotten places. If you can’t do certain things, then hire a professional who can. Living in a clean space can be a challenge, particularly if it’s more than just you in the house, but nothing livens up a space like the ability to call it ‘done’ after a deep-clean.
Semi-annual deep cleaning can save you from a lot of things: rats, mice, asthma, allergies, feeling overwhelmed… That’s why it’s critical that you do keep your space clean and ready for the challenges of each day.
